Florence Shultz Abshier, 99, of Hayden, Idaho, died Sept. 20 at Life Care Center. She was born April 18, 1909, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, to Andrew and Mayme (Shultz) Thompson.

She was raised on the Rathdrum Prairie and attended school in Huetter and Rathdrum, Idaho. She lost her hearing at the age of 12 but went on to graduate from Rathdrum High School in 1927. During the next seven years she worked in Otis Orchards, Wash., where she took care of a family for a school teacher during the school year and worked as a fancy ironer at Yellowstone National Park during the summer.
In 1935 she was able to obtain one of the first hearing aids to come on the market and married her childhood sweetheart, Louis Satchwell. They farmed on the Rathdrum Prairie until 1942, when they moved to Vanport, where her husband had work as a carpenter, building the town. During WWII she worked as a temporary employee at the U.S. Post Office and after the war ended Florence went to work for a hearing-aid company in Portland.
In 1953 Louis was killed in an automobile accident and Florence continued working with the hearing impaired until 1962, when she married the world famous poultryman, Jesse Hanson. They lived in Corvallis until his death in 1978. In 1981 Florence married Paul Abshier, who was employed by the Linnco Electric Company in Albany. They lived in Corvallis, Rathdrum and Post Falls, Idaho, before making their home in Hayden, Idaho, in 2003.
Florence enjoyed fishing, reading and playing games, especially bridge and pinochle. She also enjoyed music, playing both the accordion and the electronic organ, and watching animal and game shows on TV. She belonged to the Corvallis Town Club and the Junior Town club and was a member of the Philomath First Baptist Church in Philomath.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Charles Thompson; and her sisters, Emily Satchwell, Nell Waller, Evalyn Pope and Barbara Lamb. She is survived by her husband, Paul, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The graveside committal will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at Coeur d'Alene Memorial Gardens with Yates Funeral Home, Hayden Chapel in care of the arrangements. A memorial service will be held 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, at the Philomath First Baptist Church. The family prefers memorial contributions to the Philomath First Baptist Church Building Fund or Hospice of North Idaho, 9493 N. Government Way, Hayden, ID 83835.
