William Downer was mustered into Capt. Harelson's DeKalb Rifles, Co B 49th Alabama Infantry Regiment for the Confederate Army on January 5, 1862. His first wife, Annah Ingram and 2 of their 3 children died in Arkansas. They're buried in Springhill Cemetery in Faulkner County. In 1896 he married Eliza Brown Guthrie. They had five sons and two daughters. Fours sons and one daughter lived to adulthood.
