Ellen was the eldest of five daughters of Patrick Dever and Susanna Harrity Dever. She was born three months after her parents migrated from Co. Donegal, Ireland to the New World. The young family settled in Lambertville in 1861.
She largely grew up without her father, having lost him in the Civil War when she was nine years old.
Teresa was her confirmation name.
Ellen married Thomas Devine, a brick mason, on Jul. 6, 1877 at St. John's Roman Catholic Church, Lambertville. He later went blind. They never had any children.
She was a homemaker after her marriage. She also hired herself out as a scrub woman.
At one point she went through a very painful illness, and she became addicted to laudenum.
Ellen passed away at home from edema of the lungs due to arteriosclerosis after an illness of two years' duration.
Many thanks to Beverly G. Kirby-McDonough for locating Ellen's death certificate for me.
