Actress. Born Mary Frances Moss, in London, England, she came to the United States in 1852 and quickly found success on the American stage. In 1855, she made history becoming the first female theatrical manager and the following year she moved into her own self-titled theater. It was a successful venture for a number of years and after it closed, she continued to act and produce plays. On April 14, 1865, she was onstage performing in the play "Our American Cousin" at Ford's Theatre Washington, D.C. when President Abraham Lincoln was shot. She died in Montclair, New Jersey.
