JOHN LYLE McCULLY, JR. Born December 28, 1925 in Milwaukee, WI and grew up in Wausau, WI. His paternal grandfather emigrated from Canada where he was part of a Scots/Irish community and during the Civil War served in the Union Army. His mother's parents came form Germany. John was in high school at the time of WWII and, though his eighteenth birthday was in December, he was allowed with the other young men in a similar situation to remain in school and graduate in June. After graduation in 1944, he was immediately drafted, sent to Marine boot camp in San Diego and then to Camp Pendleton where he began his Marine Corps training. He served in the South Pacific in the Pegimental Weapons Company, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division and participated in the invasion of Okinawa and the post-war occupation of Beijing, where he worked in the Armed Forces Radio Station, XONE. After his discharge he attended the University of Wisconsin where he earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees and recieved an award for Outstanding Research in the Social Studies. He also worked at UW as an instructor; his duties included making arrangements for Foreign Visitors to the campus and for World Affairs Conferences. He then moved to Berkeley where he worked toward his Ph.D at U.C. Berkeley, while working there as a teaching assistant. By this time he was married and the father of two children, his GI Bill had run out and he left the univeristy, to teach Political Science and History at Laney College in Oakland, a position he enjoyed. There was a student body he found much pleasure in working with, as well as a congenial faculty where he formed many friendships. At Laney College he served as Chairman of the Political Science Department and as Faculty Senate President. In 1972 he took a sabbatical leave and traveled to England to observe the British trial court procedures in racial discrimination issues. While there, he studied at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He married Helen Leney in 1948. A son, David, was born in 1953 and a daughter, Ann, in 1958. A granddaughter, Rachel, was born in 1985. He attended St. John's Presbyterian Church while living in Berkeley and after moving to Oakland, Montclair Presbyterian Church. John had a lifelong interest in politics, which he pursued through work in political campaigns and political organizations. He was also concerned about environmental issues. As an only child he had the responsibility for his mother's care in he later years, which he undertook conscientiously.
