ESTEEMED UNION COUNTY WOMAN IS CALLED BY DEATH
Last Rites for Mrs. Joseph Powell Were Held on Monday Afternoon
Mrs. Joseph Powell passed away at her home eight miles south of Alcester, S.D., Thursday morning, August 6, 1936, at 11 o'clock, at the age of 50 years, 8 months and 6 days. She was taken seriously ill the previous evening and the end came only a few hours later, in spite of all that medical skill and loving care could accomplish.

Gena Anderson was born in Sioux Valley Township, Union county, S.D., of parents, Paul and Anna Anderson, on November 30, 1879, and has lived all her life in this community. She was baptized on December 28 of the year of her birth in the Brule Creek Church, and confirmed April 7, 1895, in the St. Paul Lutheran church, to which congregation the family belonged at that time. On November 15, 1905, she was united in marriage with Joseph Powell, and this union was blessed with two children. The first years of their married life were spent on farms in Sioux Valley Township, until they purchased the farm on which she resided at the time of her death. Mrs. Powell was a faithful and beloved wife and mother. During her failing health of the past six years, those who knew her were impressed by her patience and quiet cheerfulness in every affliction, until her sudden passing away last Thursday morning.
She leaves to mourn her departure, her husband; a son Howard; a daughter, Mrs. Alma Nygaard; two grandchildren; five sisters, Mrs. Mary Sandness, Mrs. Peter Quam, Mrs. Nels Quam, Mrs. Lewis Helseth, Mrs. Ed. Hoflund; two brothers, Sever and Peter Anderson, all of this community, besides many more distant relatives and close friends.

Funeral services were held last Monday, from the home at 1 p.m., and in Brule Creek Church at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. Walter I Anmoth. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery.

Those in attendance from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. George Powell, of Sanborn, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Emil Nelson and daughter, and Mrs. Marie Jacobson, Chas. A. Seamands and Earl Powell, all of Hettinger, N.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Russell Powell, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Ytterness and family, of Beresford, S.D.
