Harold was the son of Squire and Mary Elizabeth Birley of 64 West Fleet Street, Salford, and was baptised at St. James's Chuch, Collyhurst, and at that time their address was shown as 29, Windsor Street.
Harold enlisted at Conway on the 4th June 1915, and served served as Private 20586 19th Bn. Lancashire Fusiliers, first at home in England before being posted to France on the 23rd January 1916.
Sadly on the 1st July 1916, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, Harold received a gun shot wound to the chest. He somehow survived and was taken to a first aid station and returned home to England, as far as is known on the 4th July 1916. On his return Harold spent much of his time in hospital and on the 31st August 1917 he was discharged from the Army in Preston as being physically unfit. Harold subsequently passed away in Salford.
At the time of his passing Harold was 19 years of age.
