John Elmer Stinson, son of John Fawcett Stinson and Mary Ruth Scofield, was born on 9 September 1871 in Woodham, Ontario, Canada. He had received a certificate to teach in Canada in 1887, and taught there in a one room school. He came to the United States around 1900. Elmer and his second wife Ethel moved to Wichita, KS sometime around 1904. He traveled, selling furniture and books for a time and later finished his education, was naturalized, and began teaching in Wichita in 1915. He served overseas for the United States War Department as a secretary in the YMCA as part of a North Sea mine sweeping operation from June 1918 to September 1920 and then returned to Wichita, where he remained an educator until his retirement from Allison Jr. High School in 1941 where he had been Principal for 12 years.
