James (Jim) Gosnell was born February 6, 1922 in Pelzer, South Carolina.

He was the oldest of three sons born to Alfred C. and Odell Hughes Gosnell. He was educated in the Pelzer schools, graduating from Pelzer High School in 1939.

He enlisted into the Navy in 1940 - served as a Boatswain's Mate, thru Senior Chief and retired as a Lieutenant after twenty eight years of service to his country. While in the Navy, Jim Gosnell served on the battleship USS Mississippi in the North Atlantic from 1940-1942. During World War II he served on the USS Columbia in the Southwest Pacific from the battle Guadalcanal through the surrender of Japan. From 1949-1954, he served on board the USS Missouri during the Korean War. From 1954-1957 he served as Chief Master-At-Arms at the Naval Air Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Then 1957-1959 he was the Navy recruiter in Tallahassee, Florida. From 1959-1960 he served on the AGS-Tanner as the Hydrographic Officer in the Persian Gulf. From 1960-1968 he served at Minron 10 and aboard the USS Ozark. After retiring from the Navy January 2, 1968, he began his second successful career with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, where he was a Senior Agent until he retired in 1984.

He was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon and Ruling Elder. He was a member of Solomon Lodge #1, Omar Shrine Temple, Scottish and York Rite. He was the past president of the National Sojourners, Chapter #28 and past commander of the Heroes of 1776, he was a member of the American Legion Post 0010 and a former member of the Fleet Reserve Association.

He was married for 35 years to Joyce Faulkner who predeceased him. He is survived by his loving wife, Betty Arnold Gosnell, and his children Barbara G. Heuer and husband Bobby, Elizabeth G. Ingram, Jennifer Lynn Gosnell and Judge James B. Gosnell, Jr.; two step-children Barbara Arnold Harper, husband Dr. Pickney Harper all of Charleston, SC and Frank Arnold of Bluffton, SC; two brothers, Willard R. Gosnell and wife Jessie of Pelzer, SC and H. Gene Gosnell and wife Nancy of Lexington, SC; six grandchildren and several nephews and nieces. The relatives and friends of Lt. USN (Retired) and Mrs. James Benjamin Gosnell, Sr. are invited to attend his funeral services at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church Monday afternoon, February 9, 2009 at one o'clock. Burial will follow in Live Oak Memorial Gardens with Military Honors. The family will receive friends at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL Sunday afternoon from three until five o'clock. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Andrews Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 712 Wappoo Road, Charleston, SC 29407.
