Mrs Dayton Armstrong (Katie Palmer), frail 77-year old woman who had been missing from her home in VanHornesville for two days, was found dead Thursday afternoon in a small creek about a mile from her home. The discovery of her body, face down in a small creek about a half mile north of VanHornesville near Rte 80, by a Dominick LaGuardia, 53, of Sharon Springs, brought to an end a search by more than 100 men, a helicopter and a blood-hound. Boy Scouts, members of the VanHornesville, St Johnsville and Springfield fire departments joined the volunteers in the search. Dr. C.C. Whittemore, Herkimer County coroner, ruled that Mrs Armstrong had died from accidental drowning. Mrs Armstrong, 4 foot 10 inch woman, weighing only 80 pounds, had been ailing for some time.
She was born in Springfield, Otsego County, daughter of William H. and Hannah VanBuren Palmer. She attended Springfield schools and was graduated from Richfield Springs Teachers Training School. She had taught in area schools. In 1906 she was united in marriage with Dayton Armstrong and they have since resided on their farm near VanHornesville. She was a member of the VanHornesville Methodist Church and its W.S.C.S. Surviving is her husband and one brother, Arthur Parmer of Las Vegas, New Mexico. The Rev. Stanley Smith officiated at her funeral on Saturday and burial was in VanHornesville Cemetery.
