James W Sherman Adkisson was born June 20, 1870 in Roane, Tennessee to William Walker and Caroline Dugger Adkisson. James Sherman grew up on a farm and became a Farmer just as most of the males in his family had been doing for generations before him.

At age 22, on 4 Jun 1893, James married Sarah Elizabeth "Sallie" Taylor and they settled in Roane initially to start their own farm and family. Sometime between 1910 and 1920 James and Sally moved their family to Morgan County where they spent the rest of their lives. Together they had seven children, four boys and three girls; Cora, Nora, L Thurston, Clara, William, Ralph, and Ruben.

James was educated, he could read and write, and owned his farm outright. With the help of his children, the family and the farm weathered the tough years of the depression. In 1930 he was listed on the census as an Employer with a truck farm.

James W Sherman Adkisson died in Morgan County August 18, 1950. He is buried at Crab Orchard Cemetery, Oakdale, Morgan County along with Sally, and at least 5 of his children and other family from the area.
