Professional Football Player. He was born Walter William Hilgenberg and played at the right linebacker and guard positions for fifteen seasons (1964 to 1966, 1968 to 1979) in the National Football League with the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings. He was a member of the Vikings teams that appeared in Super Bowls IV in 1970, VIII in 1974, IX in 1975 and XI in 1977. After playing collegiate football at the University of Iowa, Hilgenberg was chosen by the Lions in the 4th round of the 1964 NFL Draft. He appeared in 199 career regular season games achieving All-Pro status in 1973. He died of complications from ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).
