THE MONTGOMERY MONITOR
Mount Vernon, Georgia
Thursday, April 18, 1946

After an extended illness over a period of two or more years, Mr. W.L. Calhoun, of Tarrytown, well-known citizen of Montgomery county, died Tuesday afternoon at the Vidalia Hospital, where he had been carried for treatment. A man of unusual energy, he had to some extent carried on his affairs through his declining period.

Born and reared in Montgomery County, member of a large pioneer family tracing its lineage back to Robison county, North Carolina, Mr. Calhoun was 77 years years of age. He was a successful farmer, keen in his perceptions and grasp of public affairs, and an interesting conversationalist.

He is survived by his wife who was formerly Miss Edith Kemp of Swainsboro: two sons and a daughter, J.E. Calhoun of Savannah: Mrs. P.E. Calhoun and Arnold Calhoun, of Tarrytown. He leaves one brother, Charlton Calhoun of Tarrytown, and two sisters, Mrs. Cynthia Boyd of Eagle Lake, Fla., and Mrs. Maggie Simons of Soperton, together with a number of grandchildren. He was largely connected in his native section, the upper part of Montgomery County.

Funeral services are to be held this (Thursday) morning, 11:00 o'clock from the Tarrytown Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The service will be conducted by Rev. Pope Hulett, a former pastor. Interment will follow in the Tarrytown cemetery.

Mr. Calhoun was a good citizen, enjoying the respect and esteem of his fellowmen. He was unostentatious by nature, but his innate keenness of mind and his affability made him a unique type of man - the better known the more to be appreciated.
