Otis was born in Wisconsin of Canadian immigrants, Frank and Mary Patterson and married Sophia Miller (Möller) who was born in Wisconsin of Prussian immigrants, Christoph Johann Carl Möller (Miller) and Margarethe(Etta) Sophia Maria Möller.

While in Wisconsin Otis was a wrestler and wrestled the Champion Freddy Beell in 1896. Otis lost. Otis was also a hoop maker for barrels.

Otis and his family moved to the Mille Lacs Co., MN area where he continued to be a hoop maker and later ran the hotel and restaurant in Walkon with his wife, Sophia (Möller), who was an excellent cook and maker of sweet confections. She learned to cook from her mother Margarethe Sophia Maria (Baustian) Möller who, before they immigrated to America, was a cook for Kaiser Wilhelm. Everyone that knew about her mentioned she was an excellent baker.

Otis quit the hotel business and had a new house built and became a farmer. He died in 1928.
