John W. Wolff was born on 2 February 1835 in Germany. John pursued military service in the Union Army as the Civil War broke out. John served in the 5th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (OVI) from April to August 1861. He reported to Knoxville, TN on 16 September 1861 where he enlisted as a Private in the 5th US Artillery and was assigned to Company ‘H'. The next record of his service placed him at the Battle of Chickamauga on 19 September 1863. There, he suffered a gunshot wound to his right leg and was discharged from service on 15 July 1864. He enlisted again on the next day. He had been assigned to occupy Chattanooga and Nashville during March and April 1864.

He was transferred to Battery ‘K' of the 5th US Artillery on 2 November 1864. He remained in the Army after the war and was honorable discharge as a Private on 16 July 1867 at Key West. His service expired on 16 September 1867.

John married Eliza Jane 'Mary Miller on 27 May 1869 in Chattanooga, TN. Their first child was born on 2 December 1874, but died as an infant. Their next child was Jesse, born on John's birthday, 2 February 1877. Their son Tony was born in 1882. John was a blacksmith, then foundry worker, then bed maker. He began receiving a Civil War service pension of $25 per month by 12 May 1912. Mary died on 19 December 1911. John suffered a massive heart attack while washing his face out on the porch on 1 August 1913 and is buried at the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
