Parsons Sun Jan. 19, 1993 Thekla H. Beard, 99, a longtime resident of Erie died January 17, 1993. She was born November 17, 1893, in Atchison County to Leo and Nellie (Smith) Janssen. In 1901, she moved with her parents to Erie, where she grew up and attended the Dodd country school. She and Don Beard were married March 29, 1914, and lived in rural Erie. He died Feb. 15, 1975. In 1980 she moved to Erie, where she lived until entering the nursing home. Mrs. Beard was a member of the Federated Church in Erie. In earlier years, she was an active church worker. She was a charter member of the Friendship Quilting Club and was a Gray Lady at the Erie Rest Home for many years. Her hobbies were quilting and gardening. Survivors include two sons, Vern Beard and Jay Beard; two daughters, Ada Sanders ad Mary Volmer; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, a great-great-granddaughter; and a sister, Hester McAdams. A son, William Beard, two brothers and a sister preceded her in death.

Nellie remarried to John L. Hines, so Thekla and her siblings were raised by her step-father in Galesburg, Kansas.
