Raphael J. Michels, 91, of Independence, died Tuesday, June 23, in Independence.
He was born in Stanley, Iowa on Nov. 14, 1900, the son of Dominic and Katheryn Hentz Michels. On Nov. 24, 1922, he and Anna May Spragg were married in Waterloo. She preceded him in death in 1984. Michels farmed in Buchanan County and worked at the Mental Health Institute in Independence. He was a member of St, John's Catholic Church.
Michels is survived by four sons, Clement Michels of Hazelton,Norman Michels of Independence, Walter Michels of Phoenix, Ariz., and Lyle Michels of Cedar Falls; six daughters, Eveline Wengert of Waterloo, Loretta Michels of Duluth, Minn., Margaret (Mrs. Charles) Jenkins of Laporte City, Bertha Sepulveda of Phoenix,. Ariz., Rosalie Rhode of west Union, and Dorothy (Mrs. Gardner) Dame of Whitten, Calif.; 46 grandchildren and 83 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in deaths by his parents: one son, Ronald Michels; three brothers; six sisters; eight grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.
