George F. Oliver, a native of Shelby County, was elected county tax collector in 1904 and was elected to the state legislature in 1910. During 1911-1912 he owned and edited The Champion and also published the Center Daily News.

Mr. Oliver was killed instantly near his home when he fell from a wagon loaded with wood and was run over by the hind wheel. At the time he was coming out of the field where he had loaded the wood and had just passed through a large gate when the team mules became frightened by a loose animal. His small son was walking behind the wagon. Rev. H. J. Hayes, assisted by Rev. B. E. Tutton, conducted funeral services at the Methodist Church. Survivors included his wife, 3 daughters, 1 son, 2 brothers, and 1 sister.
