Mr. Koonce died Sunday, Aug. 28, 2005, at his home. He was born March 21, 1929, in the Buncombe Community to William Thomas and Flora Russo Koonce. He graduated with the Class of 1947 from Gary High School and was a sergeant first class in the Army Chemical Corps during the Korean War. He married Nellie Sue Sutton, Oct. 10, 1953. Mr. Koonce owned and operated Koonce Cement. He was a farmer and served eight years as a county commissioner for Precinct 1, Panola County. He was a member of the Gary Masonic Lodge, Shriners, Sharon Temple of Tyler and Eastside Baptist Church in Gary.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Koonce of the Buncombe Community; two daughters, Debbie Brewer of Chandler and Jeanne Dupuis of Conroe; three grandchildren; one brother, James Koonce of Tenaha; one sister, Wanda Price of Houston; other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers will be Larry Price, Rusty Koonce, Dale Koonce, Dick Haynes, Clyde Graves, Lewis Stephens and Robert Lewis.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.
