Born in Columbia, he was the son of Paul Schmidt and Tina Hamby Berry. He attended Bates Middle School and was a member of the band.
Survivors besides his father of Sumter and mother and stepfather Jeff Berry of Lexington include a sister, Amber Schmidt of Sumter; his paternal grandparents, Richard and Glenna Schmidt of Sumter; maternal grandparents, Gary Hamby, Sr. of Murrells Inlet and Sharon and Charles Jordan of Lexington; maternal great-grandparents, J.V. and Doris Hamby of Murrells Inlet; two aunts, Cheryl Schmidt and Angela Timmons (Isiadore), both of Sumter; three uncles, Tony Schmidt of Portsmouth, VA, Gary Hamby, Jr. of Lexington, and Rick Nelson of Sumter; four cousins, Steven Timmons, Kevin Timmons, Harley Nelson and Andrew Nelson; and a special friend, Lori Ash of Sumter.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mark Bordeaux officiating.
Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of his grandparents, 2640 Hodge St., Sumter.
Memorials may be made to the Bates Middle School Band, 715 Estate St., Sumter, SC 29150.
