Grover Cleveland "Lightnin'" King Jr., 82, of Amarillo died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008.

Private burial will be in West Hill Cemetery in Sherman by Cox-LaGrone Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive.

Mr. King was born Jan. 1, 1926, in Amarillo to Grover and Esther King. He was raised in Amarillo and graduated from Panhandle High School. He attended North Texas State University and West Texas State University. He was a member of the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. King earned a Purple Heart while fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. He fought with the "Fighting 69th" Infantry Division out of New York. He married Doris Lawson on July 31, 1955, in Sherman.

Mr. King worked as a salesman for Ponca Wholesale more than 30 years until his retirement in 1986. He loved working with the public and sales and had a great love for model railroads.

He was preceded in death by a son, Lawson "Bubba" King; and a grandson, Brandon Lawson King.

Survivors include his wife, Doris King; a son, Bruce King of Amarillo; a sister, Patricia Leckie of Florida; a grandson, Bryan King of Amarillo; four great-grandchildren; a cousin, Charlene Layman of Amarillo; and a niece and nephew.

The family suggests memorials be to Attn: Bonnie Lasher, Amarillo State Center for Human Development, P.O. Box 3250, Amarillo, TX 79116; or BSA Hospice P.O. Box 950 Amarillo, TX 79105.
