Joseph Thomas Watson was born on October 1884 in Philadelphia, the only son of Thomas Watson and Mary Cael Watson. He was married twice, first to Nellie and then to Annie, but had no children. He joined the U.S. Navy during the First World War to help support his twice-widowed mother. While onboard a ship, he contracted tuberculosis and died at Fort Lyons, Colorado in 1921. At her request, Joseph's mother was buried next to him upon her own death in 1949.
