He served with the 198th Delaware National Guard and was a veteran of World War II.

He was also a decorated veteran of the Korean War, a commissioned military intelligence officer, and an army aviator observer.

He received the Air Medal and three oak-leaf clusters for flying sixty-five combat missions over enemy territory.

He served as the commandant of the Army War College, Carlisle, Pa. barracks from 1975 through 1978.

He also received a doctorate in education from George Washington University in 1973.
