Gwen passed away Sunday, October 5 in Kalamazoo. She was born on May 18, 1921 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Glenn and Hazel May (Orcutt) Mearing, and had been a lifelong resident of Kalamazoo. Gwen was a member of the Stockbridge Avenue United Methodist Church, where she belonged to the Rebecca Circle and the United Methodist Women. During her working years, she had been employed by the Upjohn Company for 23 years. On May 25, 1940 she was united in marriage to Howard Jay Woods, who preceded her in death on October 16, 2000. Gwen is survived by her sons, Norm H. and Cheryl Woods of Holland, and Dale A. Woods of Mattawan; and a granddaughter, Tiffany Woods of Grand Rapids. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday in the Stockbridge Avenue United Methodist Church, 1331 Race Street, with Pastor Calvin Hill officiating. A private family committal will take place at Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St. on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Stockbridge Avenue United Methodist Church, the American Red Cross or Hospice of Greater Kalamazoo.
