Son of Jno P. Waters & Mary Ethel (Vining) Waters. Family friend of J. Clark (Submitter).
George was stationed as a US Navy Gunner in WWII on the SS Alaskan, a general cargo steamer owned by the American-Hawaiian Steamship Company. The ship left Africa on a military supply run enroute to Dutch Guiana on the coast of Brazil. Under the Command of Kapitänleutnant Carl Emmermann, the German Nazi Submarine U-172 torpedoed and shelled the SS Alaskan at 0650 Zulu Time on November 28, 1942 at 03°58'N, 26°19'W approximately 1/2 way between
Africa and Brazil. The Alaskan sank 55 minutes later bow first. George made it to shore at Salinas, Para, Brazil, where he passed away from injuries and was laid to rest at a cemetery in Salinas. His mother never knew he survived the sinking. She was told by the US Navy his body was lost at sea and never recovered. Research of the sinking of the Alaskan and it crew is thoughly documented by Mr. Eric Stone. The account can be found at: http://www.ssarkansan.com/home/american-hawaiian-in-wwii/alaskan

*The U-172, under the Command of 22 year old Oberleutnant Z.S. Hermann Hoffmann, was sunk on December 13, 1943 from a combination of depth charges and fire from Navy destroyers. 12 Germans lost their lives and 28 were taken prisoner.
