I remember him as a young man, medium height, well built, a very nice looking man with the most beautiful wavy hair, a rather gay person. He drove a fast horse and used to sing a little ditty to him, "Hoot, Hoot says the owl, it's almost dark-I go a courting day or light-I think it is a very goodway to court-all night and sleep all day". He must have been past 30 years old when he married a young widow named Winifred Willison-Bradley about 1900. Winifred and Darcy had one daughter, Kermie was born July 11,1907. Winifred Willison Scaman was born 17 Jul 1871 and died 21 May 1908.
Darcy took homestead in Mentor Township on the banks of Long Creek, Northwest of Noonan in 1902. They farmed there a few years then settled in Kermit and he and his brother Sylvester opened up the first dray line in that town. Kermie was the first child born in Kermit and she was named and given a lot in Kermit. her mother died in 1908. After her death, Darse and Kermie moved to the farm of his parents. Kermie grew up there and her father stayed with Grandpa Scaman as long as he lived to help operate the farm and look after his father in his last years, a very faithful son.

Dray and Stage Line linking Kermit North Dakota to Noonan, North Dakota was established by Darcy Scaman in 1902 .He hauled supplies from Flaxton, and occasionally from Estevan, Sask. which was the largest town in the area at that time.
The railroad was surveyed, but it was not completed until the summer of 1906. During this time, from 1902 until 1908, the draying business flourished. He was kept busy hauling basic supples for the first merchants of Kermit. Even after the Soo Line was completed, the winter were so severe that the trains could not negotiate the deep drifts for weeks at a time, and this was when Scaman Dray line came to the fore.
Darcy's winter attire had to be adequate, as his dray sled was pulled by four lively horses. His outer wear consisted of a great buffalo coat that nearly touched the ground, a fur cap, a pair of dog skin mittens with great cuffs reaching nearly to his elbows, and knee-high overshoes. Of course, he was never without his red wool long johns. He wore several pair of wool socks inside felt boots, wool pants and shirt, and over all this his OshKosh By Gosh overalls. He had a ferocious black handlebar mustache and his keen blue eyes sparkled with pleasure, for he was proud of his rig and enjoyed his work.
