Freda Louise Whitehead, 86, of McAlester, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008, at Walnut Grove Living Center. Born Oct. 23, 1921, at Scipio, to Walter and Janie (Hickman) Boyd, she later moved to McAlester where she graduated from McAlester High School in 1939. She was a charter member of the First Freewill Baptist Church of McAlester. She married J.C. Whitehead on Feb. 26, 1941, at McAlester. She and her husband had a successful automobile repair business in McAlester and she worked alongside him in their farming and ranching operations just north of Lake McAlester at Ulan and Scipio. She was employed at the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant where she retired on Jan. 2, 1986. She enjoyed attending her church and serving the community in delivering “Meals on Wheels” until her health deteriorated. She also enjoyed watching and reading about all manner of sporting events, particularly professional football, baseball and basketball. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Woody King (Note: parents of Keith), of McAlester, Carolyn and Mike Fuller, of Powell, Tenn.; one son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Pam Whitehead, of Springfield, Ill.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, and three sisters and brothers-in-law, Comella and Kenneth Bone, of Tulsa, Mavis and Enie Tobler, of Spiro, Irma and Bob Barrigan of Oklahoma City. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the First Freewill Baptist Church, 332 W. Carl Albert Pkwy., McAlester, OK, 74501 or Hospice of McAlester, P.O. Box 1333, McAlester, OK, 74501. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.C.; parents; stepmother, Audie; sisters, Sylvia Haywood, Rosetta Whitehead, Mildred Snow, and grandson, Keith King. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Tannehill Cemetery Pavilion with the Rev. Joel Kircher officiating. Burial will be at Tannehill Cemetery under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of McAlester.
