Robert was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia and became a U.S. citizen on May 19, 1888.
He married Ann E. Wenzell in 1842.

During the Civil War, Robert enrolled in the 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery on January 27, 1862 and was mustered in on February 28, 1862 at the age of 39. He served in Battery B as a Private.
His unit first served during the Civil War at Pea Patch Island, Delaware and then his unit was transfered to Fortress Monroe, Virginia and attached to Camp Hamilton, 7th Corps, Dept. of Virginia.
After the War Robert and Ann settled in Wilmington, De. Robert started a construction business and went on to build 70 houses in Wilmington.
