Served during the Civil War as a Corporal with Company I, 76th Ohio Infantry. He was a member of the troops that marched through Georgia with General Sherman.

His wartime letters to his mother were included in Dr. Bell Wiley's history book. The Wilmington museum has some of his possessions.

After the war William worked as a cabinet-maker and carved wooden busts on ships at the Harlan Plant of the Ship Building Corporation.

William was a member of the Wilmington City Council for 12 years and also served on the Board of Education, GAR Washington Lodge of Masons, IOOF, Heptasophs, Kinghts of Pythias, and Sons of Veterans.
