My precious Grandma was born to German immigrants Rudolph Grau and Anna Link on Jan. 8, 1913 in Forest Park, Illinois. She was the youngest of four children. She worked in her parents' bakery on Madison Ave. in Forest Park.
She met her husband, Willard John Dibbern, while working at a grocery store. They were married in April 1934 and had two children. She worked at the Oak Park Library for many years and attended her beloved Forest Park Baptist Church until she was no longer able to.
She cherished her family, including her two children, five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, as well as her two sisters and her brother and her niece and nephews.
She loved reading and writing. She wrote several short stories and even published a book, "Papa's Haus," which was loosely based on the lives of her ancestors. She appreciated genealogy and was often called upon by family members to fill in the blanks of various branches of the family tree.
She loved all of her pets dearly, and she had many throughout the years. She especially loved her dogs Hildie and Shelley and her cat Corey, which were her last pets before her death. Their ashes were buried with her.
Grandma was a strong Christian woman and loved to sing hymns and study the bible. Her favorite hymns were "In the Garden," "How great thou art," and "It is well with my soul."
She was a devoted Chicago Cubs fan, and in her last few years, watching Cubs games was often the highlight of her day.
She died at 95 and a half years young in her beloved home.
She will be sorely missed especially by me, her Granddaughter. I loved her so very much, and even though she lived a long, happy and fulfilled life, I could never have enough time with her. I loved our talks. Playing games from Rummy to 20 questions. Singing together while she played the piano. Writing letters back and forth from when I was young until she could no longer write letters due to failing eyesight. I will miss her soft hands, her delicious apple sauce, her gentle wisdom (she'd always tell me in times of trouble, "This too shall pass.")
I will love you and miss you forever, until we meet again in Heaven my sweet Grandma. XOXOXO
