Former Carrollton Mayor Dies at 80

CARROLLTON - Former Carrollton Mayor Homer Lee Nunley who later was elected a town alderman, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 1995, at Tyler Holmes Memorial Hospital in Winona. He was 80.

Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. today in Evergreen Cemetery in North Carrollton.

Mr. Nunley, the retired manager of the Carroll County Co-op, served as mayor of Carrollton from 1965 to 1969.

He graduated from Valley High School in 1933 and went to work with the county agent of Carroll County in 1934.

Before being appointed to the coop position in 1948, he served as office deputy for then-Sheriff John Tom Allen. He was the manager at the co-op for 41 years until his retirement in 1989.

Mr. Nunley was a member of Carrollton Baptist Church, where he was Sunday School superintendent for 11 years and was ordained as a deacon in 1962.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Margaret "Pie" Arlington Nunley, a son, William Mayhew Nunley of Indianola; two sisters, Betty Jane Johnston and Juanita McCracken , both of Carrollton; two brothers, W.D. "Bo" Nunley of Carrollton and Henry "Pete" Nunley of Greenwood; and three grandchildren, Amy Nunley, Erica Nunley and Jon Nunley, all of Indianola. The Rev. Norris Corley and the Rev. Billy Nunn will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Henry Leon Nunley, Samuel Thomas Raybum, Mike Whitfield, George John Shackelford, William Pate Shackelford, George Allen Johnston, Charles Terry Johnston and Bobby Eugene Nunley.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Carrollton Baptist Church or a favorite charity.

Lee Funeral Home in Winona is in charge of arrangements.
