Dr. Humphrey was born in Tippah county Mississippi on August 30th 1897. He attended Mississippi State Teacher's College and recieved his BA from Blue Mountain College in 1929. In 1931 he achieved his MA from the University of Chicago and a PhD from Ohio State University in 1939. He was President of Mississippi State from 1934 until 1945 when he took the position of President of the University of Wyoming where he served until 1964. He worked toward developing a strong University by establishing a strong academic institution driven by research and by drawing on strengths of the faculty. He also was instrumental in developing a strong athletic department. His name lives on at Mississippi State as the school sports center is named after him and at The University of Wyoming where the science center also carries his name.
