Dennis Rhodes, life-long resident of Argonia, Kansas and owner of Rhodes Construction Company died Sunday, September 14, 2008 at Via Christi-St. Francis in Wichita, Kansas at the age of 47.
Dennis was born the son of Don L. and Ruth Caroline (Berry) Rhodes on Saturday, February 11, 1961 in Wellington, Kansas
He was a graduate of Argonia High School in the Class of 1979. Following high school, Dennis attended Wichita Vo-Tech to study construction. In his younger years he farmed with Phill Wacker.
He was committed to the community of Argonia. Dennis was actively involved in many of the community projects and was a former volunteer with the Argonia Fire Department. He also served on the committee and design team for the Chicaskia River Dam.
Dennis was a quick study and was self-taught on many of his construction skills and techniques. He was glad to share those skills with his frinds and nephews. Dennis was a dependable man that was always ready and available when needed.
He enjoyed vacationing with his close friends and classmates throughout the years. Dennis also looked forward to the yearly vacations to Florida with his daughter. He was a deeply devoted father, son, brother, nephew and friend that will be truly missed.
He was preceded in death by his mother Ruth Rhodes and Grandparents. Survivors include his daughter DeNelle Rhodes of Wellington, Kansas, father, Don Rhodes of Argonia, Kansas, brother, Randy Rhodes of Houston, Texas, sisters; Tammi Florentin and Dona Jones both of Argonia, Kansas, nieces and nephews; Preston Rhodes and Rebecca Enriquez of both of Mulvane, Kansas, Joshua Florentin, Nicholas Florentin, Benjamin Floretin, Alicia Jones, Brent Jones and Daniel Jones all of Argonia, Kansas, along with several close cousins and many friends and classmates. We love you and miss you Dennis.

Hero is the word being used to describe Argonia native Dennis Rhodes. He didn't know how to swim and he didn't know the people who were trapped inside a raft on the Chikaskia River but he went into the water to save them anyway.

"I'm on your team and I said let's go in and do it and I thought if somebody could it would have been him," explains Daren Drouhard.

He watched as his best friend made the choice to wade out into the water. He was attempting to save 4 - 19 year olds and a juvenile who were stuck on the dam. Three rescue workers were also in the water after a failed rescue attempt.

Rhodes was wearing a life jacket when he went into the water. The people Rhodes was trying to save were not wearing life jackets but were pulled out safely.
