After the end of the War, Jefferson attended North Western Christian University (now Butler University) in Indianpolis.
Jefferson married Anna Reynolds on 29 Sep 1866 in Whitestown, Boone Co, IN. They had children Earl Russell (1867), Arthur Chester(1869), Nora Frances (1871), Rolla Floyd (1873), Chesley Reynolds(1877), John (1879), Wilford (1882), and Owen Ray (1883).
In approximately 1887, Jefferson and Anna and their family moved to Indianapolis, where Jefferson worked as an assistant manager and special agent of the United States Life Insurance Company at 25 East Market Street.
Jefferson received a pension starting 7 Sep 1888.
In Feb 1909 Jefferson and his wife Anna moved together to the Indiana State Soldiers Home in Lafayette, IN, where Anna died a month later, in March 1909.

DEATH AND FUNERAL NOTICE:
CASSEL--Jefferson M., passed away Sunday, June 9, at 3 p.m. Funeral at the home of his son, C.R. Cassel, 20 North Gray St., Wednesday, June 12, at 3 p.m. Friends invited. Burial at Crown Hill.
