Capt John T Stewart left Goshen Valley (Cherokee County) AL January 13, 1862. His company was known as "Shorter Guards". They went to Nashville, TN with 3 other companies organized into a battalion and commanded by Major Griffin, then to Huntsville, AL and on to Mississippi. He was killed at Shiloh. His body rests on the field of unmarked graves.
