Mordechai was the son of Moshe and Lea (Schwartz) Zawalower. He was born in Zlotniki, in the Galicia province of Austria-Hungary (now Ukraine). In about 1896, he immigrated by himself to the United States, settling in Manhattan. On his arrival, he adopted the first name "Max".

Max worked as a waiter and became a naturalized citizen on July 29, 1904. On June 23, 1913, he legally changed his last name to "Waller".

Max operated a kosher butcher shop for many years in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan. He was reputedly instrumental in bringing a number of European refugees to the United States during the Second World War period.

Max lost a leg to diabetes. He was survived by his wife, five children, and five grandchildren.
