Bessie Mae Birkel, 85, of Ellsworth, died Friday at River Falls Area Hospital. Born Oct. 15, 1922, in the town of River Falls, the daughter of George and Mathilda "Tillie" (Christensen) Larson, she was a 1941 graduate of Ellsworth High School. On June 19, 1945, she married John "Johnnie" Birkel at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, rural Lost Creek, in Ellsworth. She worked for the Pierce County A.S.C.S. office and later went to the Village of Ellsworth, where she served as village clerk and treasurer until her retirement. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Ellsworth. She enjoyed cooking and baking, handy work, and fishing and hunting.

Survivors include her husband, John of Ellsworth; children Thomas "Tom" (Kathy) of Elmwood, Wis., Mary "Mar" (Grant) Wulff of Red Wing, and Patricia "Patti" (Bill) Schommer of Hager City; eight grandchildren and one sister, Jeanette Jensen of River Falls. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Burdick and Irene Slocum and three brothers, Leonard, Robert and Gerald Larson.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Francis Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Lost Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren Tyler, Carter, and Connor Birkel; Cole, Colin, and Kirsten Wulff and Owen and Bessie Jane Schommer. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Hill Funeral Home, Ellsworth, and one hour before the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to the family.
