John came from Northern Ireland in 1848, a tanner by trade as was his brother William (a tanner at New Baltimore, NY, FAG #49496820). He and Ellen McFerren were married the previous year in Kircubbin Presbyterian Church, on the Ards Peninsula in County Down, Ireland. After their immigration, they settled in Camden, Oneida Co, NY where their first child, Ann Eliza was born.
Around 1852, John became foreman at the Eagle Tannery in Cleveland Village, Oswego Co, NY. He and Ellen had eight children, seven of whom survived. After she died in 1865, John and the children moved to New York Mills, a suburb of Utica, where those who were over the age of ten were working in a large cotton mill by the 1870 census. The youngest child was only a few months old when their mother passed away.
According to the 1875 NY State Census (p 13) John ended his life by gunshot, back in Cleveland where he was buried. One can only imagine that the stress of losing his wife and the responsibility of all those children took their toll on him. Three of his children - Joseph (then 21), Mary and William - were recorded in the same census at his house in Cleveland Village; they sold it in 1877.
