Dwight Allen Wells, 86, life-long farmer and resident of Jacks Creek and Lexington Road communities of Forest Hill, White Hall, Clays Ferry, and Boonesboro, passed away Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at the Pattie A. Clay Regional Medical Center. He was a life-long member of the Mt. Pleasant Christian Church, where he served as deacon, elder, and Chairman of the Board. He was a lover of Gospel music. He was a World War II veteran of the United States Navy, serving as a signalman aboard a cargo transport in the Pacific Theater. Mr. Wells represented the northern and eastern areas of Madison County on the School Board for over 14 years. He served Richmond and Northern Madison County as State Representative for 12 years during the administrations of three governors, Louie Nunn, Wendell Ford, and Julian Carroll. He held positions in the administrations of John Y. Brown and Martha Layne Collins. He served on the committees of State Government, Appropriations and Revenue, Education, and Chairman of the Counties and Special Districts Committee. Mr. Wells also served as Majority Whip of the Democrat Party during the administration of Governor Julian Carroll. He organized the White Hall Water District and served for years with others as volunteer commissions.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Terry Lynn Wells; sons, David Dudley Wells and Charles Snowden "Chuck" Wells; parents, Boyd Dudley and Bertha Asbill Wells; sisters, Dorothy (Wayne) Bucher, Doris (John) Patton, Opal Wells, and Hazel Wells; brothers, Douglas Wells and Daniel Wells.
He is survived by his beloved wife and companion of 63 years, Betty Pigg Wells; granddaughters, Hannah Cassandra "Cassie" Wells, Ashley Elaine Wells, and Hayley Lynn Wells; grandson, Jared Adams; great granddaughter, Kylie Lynn Davis; daughters-in-law, Annemie (Paul) Adams and Stacy (Roger) Dunsmore; brothers, Donald (Martha) Wells, Dean (Elizabeth) Wells, and Darrell (Wanda) Wells; sisters, Diana (Artie) Ross, Darlene (James) Sparks, and Darnetta (Tommy) Congleton; sister-in-law, Toots Wells; His namesake and great nephew, Dwight Carter Skipworth.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 14, 2011, at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home, conducted by former State Senator Joe Prather, former State Representative Bobby Richardson, and former Pastor Dr. Jerry Frasure.
Pallbearers will be Evan McCord, John McCord, Gary Sparks, Bill Ward, Rod Barclay, Tommy Jo Wells, Ted Mansfield, and Doug West. Honorary pallbearers will be four former Governors, Wendell Ford, Julian Carroll, John Y. Brown, and Martha Layne Collins, two former church pastors, Dean Brewer and Tim Jones, and current pastor, Shannon Franklin, Eugene Bowling, Bruce Maggard, Harrold Harris, James William Harris, Jep Fortney, Billy Thomas, Bob Roberts, Ronnie Rochards, Donald Ray, Glenn White, Shannon Combs, Paul Parsons, Johny Collins, Andre Boden, Stan Adams, Richard Rogers, Ardith Ross, James Sparks, Tommy Congleton, Vernon Curry, J. D. Wells, Dr. Robert Botkin, Lin McCuddy, Ronnie Richards and Donald Asbill.
