Eli was a soldier in the from 1776 to 1780 as a lieutenant with Col. John Crain's artillery. Some sources say he rose as high as Captain. He was wounded at Germantown on October 4th, 1777. Sometimes he is referred to as Col. Eli Parsons, a title he gained during his participation in Shays' Rebellion, in which he was second in command. After the rebellion failed, he fled to Canada, but eventually received amnesty and settled in Oswego, NY. He owned a tavern for a time. He had a son, also named Eli, who drowned in Lake Ontario during the War of 1812 while attempting to carry a load of cannon balls in an open boat from Oswego to Sacket's Harbor.
