Charles was born in Springfield Township on August 1/31, 1841 to Abel Bemis and Esther Swan Bemis. Abel was born March 11, 1799 in Vermont. He was a shoemaker. Abel died on October 20, 1873/1875. A cemetery reading done in 1971 states his headstone was missing. Esther was born around 1807 in New York. She died on October 11, 1869 and is buried in Lot 96 Section 17A.

Charles had the following siblings: Joseph born around 1833 in Ohio and in the 1850 census was a laborer. Maria was born around 1835 in Ohio. Nancy was born around 1836 in Ohio. Nancy died on March 18, 1852 at the age of 15y3m18d and is buried in Lot 96 Section 17A. Nancy is not listed in source 87. Betsy/Betsey was born around 1839 in Lucas County, Ohio and died before 1877 of consumption. She married Danarbus B. Young around 1865, the son of Samuel Young and Nancy Dean. Danarbus was born September 30, 1832 in West Toledo, Lucas County, OH. Betsey and Danarbus had a daughter, Augusta Roseline around 1866 who married Frederick Schultz, April 5, 1885 in Lambertville Methodist Church in Lambertville, MI. William C./G. born around 1843 in Ohio. Per source 86, he was the son of Abel and Esther and he died March 25, 1863. William G. is buried in Plot 96 Section 17A. William was in Co. F, 100th OI. (See below) Abel/William Abel Jr. born around 1849 in Ohio. There is an Able Bemis who died in October 20, 1873 in Springfield Township and is buried in Lot 96 Section 17A, and Alma born around 1851 in Ohio.

Source 87 also lists a Mary, Martha, and Amelia Ellena Bemis. Amelia was born September 3, 1845 and died April 28, 1849 at the age of 3ym25d, and she is in Lot 96 Section 17.
Charles enlisted on September 28/29, 1861 at Toledo for 3 years by Norton at age 20 in Battery H. Sources say he was 5' 4¼" in height with blue eyes and brown hair and was a farmer. He was discharged on September 28, 1864 for expiration of term of service. John Merrell writes, "Took Charley Bemis to the Hospital. He has the measles but has got nearly over them and the Dr. thinks that he will have the lung fever if he's not taken care of better, so we took him away to the hospital." –Saturday, 11th January, 1862.

Charles reenlisted on March 8, 1865 for one year into Co. H, 3rd Ohio Calvary and was discharged in Columbus, OH on August 4, 1865. Source 75 says he mustered out with his company on August 4, 1865 at Edgefield, TN.

On March 19, 1866 Charles married Lucetta/Lucella A. Ashburn/Osborne, the daughter of John W. and Mary W. Osborne of Tecumseh, Michigan, on March 19, 1866 in Tecumseh, MI. Lucetta was born in Tecumseh and died on September 23, 1906 at Trilby (now Toledo), Lucas County, Ohio. FamilySearch said she died in Whiteford. Charles was a farmer and belonged to Page Post 471 GAR of Sylvania, Ohio and the Lawton Post GAR near Samaria, MI.

Charles and Lucetta had six children. Herbert Wallace, born July 15/25, 1867 in Monroe County, Michigan and he died in June 30, 1943 in Ann Arbor. Joseph born around 1833 in Ohio and is listed in the 1850 census as a laborer. William C., born April 27, 1869 in Lambertville, Michigan and he died February 14, 1871. Bertha A. was born April 13, 1872 in Whiteford Center, Michigan. Bertha married Will Osborn on December 25, 1900 in Whiteford, MI by A. M Haddis/x. Bertha died November 7, 1954 in Jackson, Michigan. Ernest O., born January 16, 1874 in Whiteford Center and he died December 14, 1948 in Howell, Michigan. Ernest married Alta Holt who was born May 7, 1875. Ernest was a school teacher and a mail carrier. Guy, born May 15/16, 1876. Source 84 said Guy married Alta I. Holt on June 4, 1899 in Temperance, MI. Guy died December 30, 1970 in Springfield Township, Lucas County, Ohio. Per source 87 Guy married a Mary E. who was born in June 1878. Bernice was born September 19, 1879/1880 in Whiteford Center. She married Edward C. Bennett on July 8, 1900 in Whiteford, MI by A. M. Haddix/s. Bernice died April 12, 1955 in Toledo. Mabel was born November 8, 1881 in Whiteford Center and died April 15, 1884 in Whiteford Center. Ethel May was born February 1, 1885. Ethel married Howard Brunt and she died December 10, 1954 in Toledo.

Charles then married Maria Billon on September 4, 1912 at Monroe, Michigan. She was previously married to Frank Whiting on December 25, 1877.

Charles was born on August 1, 1841 in Springfield Township, Lucas County, Ohio. Different sources list different dates of death for Charles: Charles died at Samaria, Michigan on March 18, 1903 by suicide with revolver. Charles died on October 5/10, 1918 in Jackson, MI and is buried in Whiteford Union Cemetery, Sterns Road, Sec. 31, Lambertville, MI. He lived in Samaria, MI in 1918. Charles died September 23, 1906 in Trilby, Lucas County, Ohio. Both he and Lucetta are buried in buried in the Whiteford Township Cemetery, Sterns Road, Monroe County, Michigan.

Census data shows he lived in Waynesfield Township, Lucas County, OH (1850), Spencer Township (1860), Whiteford Township, MI (1880, 1890, 1900), and Samaria, Monroe County, MI in 1918. His occupation in 1880 was farmer.

Charles had a 57 acre farm in Whiteford where he served two terms as a trustee. He was a member of the GAR Page Post #471. He served as treasurer of Whiteford for two terms and bought his property around 1865.
"I lived in Monroe County, Mich. till fall of 1866 then moved to Lenawee Co., Michigan till 1868, when I returned to Monroe Co., Mich. Where I have resided to the present." –Charles Bemis, February 26, 1907, Pension Records.

He was born in Ohio around 1843 (38). Enlisted on August 2, 1862 at the age of 19. He died in Lexington, KY but not from war wounds on March 25, 1863 at the age of 20 or 19y 7m 15d. He is buried in the Springfield Township Cemetery in lot 96, section 17-A, grave 8.

He is listed in the 1850 census for Waynesfield Township as a 7 year old son of Abel (born ca 1798 in Vermont) and Esther (born ca 1807 in New York) Bemis. He had a brother, Charles S. (HSSHS) who served in Battery H, First Ohio Light Artillery (see above).
