Wendell R. Smith, 82, of Quincy died at 7:20 p.m. Tuesday (July 1, 2008) in Mendon.

Born October 12, 1925 near Carthage, IL, Wendell was the son of Leslie and Marie McGee Smith. Mr. Smith was married on October 9, 1943 in Kahoka, MO to Hazel D. Hoyt she preceded him in death on December 7, 1998.

Wendell was a member of the First Baptist Church in Carthage, Herman Masonic Lodge #39, Quincy Consistory, Ansar Shrine Temple of Springfield, Quincy Shrine Club and a very active member of the Ansar Shrine Belgian Hitch Club. He enjoyed traveling and camping in his motor home and was an avid Cardinal baseball fan. Wendell used to coach area softball town teams and enjoyed watching local basketball teams. He was a former member of the Elks and South Side Boat Club, and past commander of the VFW Post 5117. Wendell served his country in the Marine Corp during WWII seeing action at Iwo Jima. He was one of 2 survivors out of 60 in his battalion.

Mr. Smith was employed as a sales manager at Prairie Farms for 33 years until his retirement in 1992.

Survivors include two daughters Carolyn Sparrow and her husband Gene of Quincy; Connie Walbring and her husband Ron of Quincy and his dear friend and companion Donna Baxter of Mendon, IL. Also surviving are Five grandchildren Gary Coulter and his wife Sandra of Quincy, Master Sgt. Robert Coulter and Lisa Moore of Las Vegas, NV, Douglas Coulter and Mitzi Hooper of Knoxville, TN, Christen Ippensen and Mark Vogel of Quincy, and Dr. Ryan Livermore and his wife Kari of Wichita, KS; and seven step grandchildren: five great grandchildren Cassie and Paige Coulter of Quincy; Lindsey Coulter of Springfield, IL; Jessica and Connor Coulter of Las Vegas; Caleb and Gabby Dell Coulter of Knoxville, TN, and Lane Ippensen of Liberty and one great grandaughter Jadyn Faith Vogel due on Wendell's birthday . One brother Wayne Smith and his wife Lucille of Macomb, IL also surviving are several step great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers Vernon, and Bernard Smith and a nephew Norman Smith.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 10:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by Pastor Nathan Rector.

Vistitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 Thursday evening at the funeral home. Herman Masonic Lodge will conduct a Masonic service at 7:00. Graveside services with military honors will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Macomb, IL.

Memorials may be made to Shriner's Children' s Hospital or Blessing Foundation for Hospice.
