James served as a Private with the 1st Delaware Infantry, Company A during the Civil War.

James received a gun shot wound at the battle of Antietam/Sharpsburg on September 17th 1862.

On September 21st, he would be sent to # 2 U.S.A General Hospital in Frederick, Maryland, where he would be discharged due to wounds on November 20th 1862.

On April 13th 1863, Private Long would be admitted to the General Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware, which would later become Tilton General Hospital.
