Author. A professor of English and creative writing at Pomona College in Claremont, California, he gained national attention in 1987 with his first novel, "The Broom of the System," which used offbeat humor, literary parody, and raffish adventure to depict a contemporary America run amok. His short fiction often appeared in Esquire, GQ, Harper's, The New Yorker and the Paris Review. Collections of his short stories were titled "Girl With Curious Hair" and "Brief Interviews With Hideous Men." His recognition as a major literary figure was solidified by his novel "Infinite Jest" (1996). Topping many best-of lists, Time magazine included it in its issue of the "100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005." His death was an apparent suicide.
