Lewiston Woman Fatally Hurt As Husband's Car Skids Into Another North of Logan

LOGAN -- A Lesiston woman was fatally injured and her husband and another man were hospitalized Thursday, the result of an accident involving a skidding automobile on the snowcovered highway three miles north of Logan.

Mrs. Valeria Laird Taggart, 64, died in a Logan hospital at 12:45 p.m., about three hours after the automobile driven by her husband had skidded into the path of a northbound vehicle.

James Taggart, 67, of Lewiston, husband of the dead woman was at Budge Memorial Hospital for observation and treatment. He was knocked unconscious and suffered severe bruises.

Con Thueson, 64, of Brigham City, driver of the northbound automobile, also was in Budge Memorial hospital with a fractured rib, fractured knee cap, cuts and bruises.

Mrs. Taggart suffered a skull fracture, concussion of the brain, broken right hip, fractured left arm, badly injured back and a fractured nose.

Mr. and Mrs. Taggart were on their way to Logan LDS Temple, driving south, when their car suddenly skidded directly into the path of the Thueson car, Sheriff Stowell said.

Mrs. Taggart was born at Mountain Dell in Salt Lake County on May 31, 1874, a daughter of Edward and Valeria Ann Flint Laird. She came to Cache County with her husband in 1900, settling in Lewiston. At the time of her death she was active in LDS Church work.

Surviving are her husband and three daughters and two sons, Mrs. Harris Pond, Blanche and Glen L. Taggart of Lewiston; Mrs. William Hatch of Logan and Spencer Taggart, LDS Institute teacher, Thatcher, Arizona.

Valeria Ann Laird Taggart

Valeria Ann Laird Taggart, 64, died on December 1, 1938 at the Budge Memorial Hospital at Logan, Utah of shock from the trauma of an auto accident that occurred at Logan on the state highway. She received fractures of the femur, arm, skull and nose and lived for 5 hours after being in the accident.

She had lived in Lewiston for one day when the accident occurred. She married James Taggart November 6, 1896 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Surviving her is her husband. She was born May 31, 1874 in Mountain Dell, Utah to Valeria Ann Flint Laird and Edward Laird.

Interment was made in the Lewiston City Cemetery on December 4, 1938. Lindquist & Sons handled the funeral arrangements.
