Killed in Action
From the 8/8/1944 Newspaper....
Saipan, Marianas Islands. Marine Pvt Jack Cooley of OKC, died from a Jap sniper's bullet on the battlefields of Saipan.
He was killed on the third day of the invasion. Up untill that time he had been in constant danger, not only from sniper's fire, but from machineguns and artillery. serving as a runner, he spent most of his time dodging from foxhole to foxhole delivering messages, frequently when the fight was the hottest.
Jack is the son of Mrs. Aurelia cooley, who was notified of her marine son's death in July. Cooley was 18 and a Marine Corps Musician.
In the Marine World War II Casualties it states he was a field music 1c.
2,949 Americans were killed in the Battle of Saipan.
