“Luther B. Mann, 99, formerly of the Newtown area, and residing at Westminster Health Care Center, West Lafayette, died Tuesday, October 13, 1992 at 12:15 p.m. at the center. He was born April 18, 1893 near Pine Village, the son of George W. and Eliza Barker Mann. He married Myrtle A. Horn, on December 26, 1917 in Williamsport. She preceded him in death on March 26, 1974.

He was a graduate of Otterbein High School’s class of 1912. He graduated from Central Normal College in 1915 and received his master’s degree from Purdue University. He was a school teacher for more than 50 years in schools in Benton, Warren, Fountain and Putnam counties. He retired in 1964 from teaching.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War I, was a member of the former United Methodist Church, now the Newtown Community Church, was a member of Green Hill Lodge #455 F&AM, where he was past master and had received an award for 75 years of membership.

He was a member of the Order of Eastern Star #282 of Newtown, of which he was past worthy patron, member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, member of American Legion Post #11 of Lafayette, past state president of the County Superintendents Association, was a member the local, state and national retired teachers’ associations, and a member of the High 12 of Lafayette, a honorary masonic lodge degree.

In 1915 he was a starting guard for the semi-pro football team from Pine Village and he had played football with the late Jim Thorpe.

Surviving, are: a daughter, Ruth (John) Martin, Route 1, Wingate; a son, Howard H., Garden Grove, California; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers and a sister.

Funeral services will be at the Maus Funeral Home, Attica, at 2 p.m. today (Friday) with the Rev. James Campbell officiating. Burial will be in Newtown Cemetery with military graveside rites. Masonic memorial services were held at 8 p.m. Thursday.
