Ben Bond Sproat
Crown Point

Ben Bond Sproat, 99 , of Crown Point, Ind., formerly of Columbus, passed away peacefully April 14, 2006, six months short of his goal of living to be 100. He was a resident of Chicagoland Christian Village for the past five years and prior to that resided in Columbus for 50 years.

He was born in Yazoo County, Miss., Oct. 14, 1906. His parents were Ben Bond and Byrd Sproat. Ben was raised in Vincennes, Ind., and graduated from Vincennes University. He was a proud graduate of Purdue University School of Agriculture and received his master's degree from the University of Maryland.

Ben spent many years working for the federal government but spent his Columbus years managing an orchard. After retirement from that job, Ben worked for the state of Indiana and federal Department of Natural Resources, finally retiring at age 80. He was an active member of the Columbus community, including DeMolay boys, was a 50-year member of Kiwanis, a member of High 12 Club and a 32nd-Degree Mason.

He will be remembered in the Columbus community for the beautiful flowers he tended with loving care and his many appearances as Santa Claus.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Helen; two sisters, Marion Brock, 92, and Jane Dougherty, 96.

He is survived by two sons, Gary (Mary Lou) Sproat of Crown Point and Kent (Betty Jane) Sproat of Jupiter, Fla.; six grandchildren, Alan (Beth) Sproat of Carrollton, Texas, Gordon (Lisa) Sproat of San Diego, Calif., Gwen (Jeff) Graystone of Hebron, Ben Sproat of Columbus, Ohio, Jordon (Brian) Schneider of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and Suzanne Sproat of Jupiter, Fla.; and five great-grandchildren.

Two memorial services will be held. The first will be held at 2 p.m. April 22 at Chicagoland Christian Village, 6685 E. 117th Ave., Crown Point, and the other at 2 p.m. April 29 at North Christian Church, 850 Tipton Lane in Columbus. Interment will be beside his wife at Oaktown.

Condolences may be given to the family prior to the services, from 1:30 to 2 p.m.
