Andrew J. Schafer, 83, of Syracuse, died Friday at Loretto. He was a veteran of the Navy, serving during World War II. He retired in 1985 as a lieutenant from the Syracuse Fire Department after 37 years. He was the recipient of the Syracuse Fire Officers Medal of Honor in 1976. He was a communicant of St. James Church, a member of the Syracuse Fire Fighters Association and was a member of American Legion Valley Post 1468. Mr. Schafer was predeceased by his wife, Mary, and three brothers, Edward, William and Frank. He is survived by his two sons, John A. (Arianna) of Syracuse and Gregory M. of Syracuse; his daughter, Mary Lynn (Terrence) Murphy of Syracuse; his grandchildren Nicole L. (Jason) Schafer Farino, and Alexis, Lynsay and Arie (Amanda) Claflin; and his seven great-grandchildren. The funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Monday in St. James Church. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery. Calling hours are Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Frasier-Shepardson Funeral home, 1217 N. Salina St. Friends wishing may contribute to the Clark Burn Center at SUNY Upstate.
