Lewis 'Lew' O. Chandler of Memphis, retired automobile salesman and a former Memphis Chicks baseball player and coach, died Wednesday night in Memphis after a long illness. He was 73. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel with burial in Memorial Park. Chandler played for the Chicks in the early 1940s. He coached baseball for Christian Brothers High School for 10 years beginning in 1945 and at the same time coached the American Legion Baseball team where he won city, regional and state championships. Chandler was a member of the CBHS Hall of Fame, the Memphis Park Commission Baseball Hall of Fame and past president of the Fountain of Youth Baseball League. He was past commander of American Legion Post 1 and a member of Forty & Eight there. He was a member of Woodland Presbyterian Church. The husband of Lila L. Chandler, he also leaves three daughters, Diane O'Keefe of Plymouth, Minn., Barbara Collins of Germantown and Jan High of Memphis; four sons, Lew Chandler Jr. of Port Charlotte, Fla., Lee Chandler of Germantown, Corbitt Chandler of Birmingham, and Steve Chandler of Louisville, Ky.; a sister, Glendy Biggs of Cartersville, Ga., 18 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
